Directions to HiHium Lake: From Kamloops take the Trans Canada (hwy #1) west for 75 kms. (46.5 miles) to the community of Cache Creek. Turn north (right) onto hwy. 97 and travel 32 kms. (19.8 miles) to 20 Mile House and turn east (right) onto Loon Creek road. Drive approx 39 kms, passing along Loon Lake and on to the junction of the 3400 Road. Turn right onto the 3400 Rd and travel south east for approx 22 km (13.6 miles). Watch for signs to access the HiHium Lake South Recreation site. Turn right at the access road. Follow this road for 2 kms. (1.2 miles) to the recreation site at the southeast end of HiHium Lake.

Alternate Route: From Clinton travel north on Hwy 97 approximately 23kms (14.2 miles). Turn southeast onto Chasm road and follow for 1 km (0.6 miles). Turn east onto Clinton Loon Lake road (3400 Rd) and travel 20km (12.4 miles) to the Bonaparte River bridge. Cross the bridge and continue on the 3400 Rd. After approximately another 31km (19.2 miles) the 3400 rd veers southwest continue following for another 5km (3 miles). Turn north onto the access road into the recreation site.

Resorts & Campsites: Private resort and public recreation site. HiHium Lake South Recreation Site offers 20 sites that are suitable for RVs and trailers, as well as boat launch, tables and toilets. Hihium Lake is a popular fishing destination.

Fishing Report: Excellent fishing for rainbows up to 3 lbs. with some going up to 8 lbs. Heavy aquatic vegetation in HiHium contain large populations of freshwater shrimp. Sedge hatches occur in late June and early July. Chironomids are heavy in early spring. Damsel fly and dragons emerge in spring and flying ants are something to watch for in early fall. All this makes HiHium lake a great lake for the fly fishers. No fishing from December 1 - April 30. Single barbless hook and a bait ban.

Viewscape: Located within the Arrowstone hills on top of the Thompson Plateau. The southwest and northwest shores are composed of coniferous forest of englemann spruce mixed with lodgepole pine. The west end surrounding the outlet of HiHium creek consists of a wide, flat grassy area with spruce and pine on either side. The east end consists of low-lying swamp containing mostly willow.

Shoreline: Englemann spruce and lodgepole pine mixed with alder and willow surround the foreshore of the lake. Fringes of sedge are found along the north and south shoreline. The east and west ends have large shoal areas extending 100 meters (328 ft.) containing waterlilies, sedges and potamogeton.

Nearby Lakes

Fatox Lake - Fatox lake, a small lake (24 ha/59 ac.) located northeast of HiHium, provides an excellent fishery for rainbows in the 2 lb. range. Camping is available but it is not organized, however, excellent campsites can be found at nearby Skookum, Deadman and Snohoosh lakes. See Bare lake for a fly in experience.
