Carp Lake Provincial Park area covers more than 19,000 hectares including Carp Lake, War Lake and numerous other lakes and streams making water activities the most popular pastime within the park. Island dotted Carp Lake encompasses over 6000 hectares of spectacular natural beauty.

The northern shore of Carp Lake has extensive sandy beaches broken by smooth-bouldered areas. The lake itself lies in a glacial till plain with thousands of grooves and drumlin-like ridges which account for its many-armed shape, its myriads of islands and countless bays and coves. The plentiful fish of Carp Lake are the prime recreational resource of the park.

Nature enthusiasts will be pleased to encounter a wide variety of animal life including moose, deer, black bears and an abundant array of birds and waterfowl. Alder and willow grow near the shoreline and back into a mixed forest of aspen, spruce and lodgepole pine.

Carp Lake was named for a passage in explorer Simon Frasers journal where he stated that the Carrier Indians came to the lake to "catch immense numbers of fish of the carp kind". Fraser, who worked for the Northwest Company in the early 1800's, founded Trout Lake Fort at McLeod Lake. This was the first white settlement west of the Rocky Mountains. Remnants of a trail used by Indians and fur traders during this time period still can be seen today.
