This
park is the first of BC's to be jointly managed by BC Parks and the
Nisga'a Tribal Council. The Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park
commemorates the devestation of of two Nisga'a villages and more than
2000 Nisga'a deaths 250 years ago during a volcanic eruption.
Legend
reads that long ago a child took a humpback salmon and slit open its
back, sticking fiery sticks in its back and making it swim. Again and
again he repeated the process despite the elders warnings. Fish are
very important to the natives and this lack of respect was a taboo that
if broken would cause misfortune. The ground rumbled and the scout who
was sent to investigate rushed back to inform the village of the smoke
and flames of the mountain top. Gwa Xts'agat
emerged from the mountainside fighting back the lava and saving many
of the villagers.
The 18,000
hectare park allows the visitor a chance to learn more of the Nisga'a
cultural heritage and the natural history of BC's volcanic landscape.
The Nisga'a lifestyle incorporates a balance between the natural elements
and human presence. The Nisga'a villages of Sii Ayans and Gitwinksihlkw
provide excellent oppurtunities for those interested in exploring this
unique native culture.
LOCATION
The
lava plain is located in the Nass Basin Landscape, 100 km north of
Terrace on the Nisga'a Highway.
PARK
FACILITIES & ACTIVITIES
Camping
- A primitive campsite is located along Vetter Creek. A picnic area
is located on the shores of Lava Lake.
Fishing
and Boating - A car-top boat launch is available. Salmon, steelhead,
trout and kokanee are resident in the parks waterways.
Hiking
and Trails - Trails lead to the parks notable features and vantage
points.
