Manning
Park was named for E.C. Manning who was Chief Forester of British Columbia
from 1935 to 1940. Situated in the Cascade Mountains of southeastern
BC, the park encompasses over 66,500 hectares of spectacular rugged
mountains, valleys, meadows, lakes and rivers.
The landscape
varies from lush, thick coastal growth to dry interior vegetation. The
surrounding forest includes species such as of Douglas fir, western
red cedar, western hemlock, subalpine fir, lodgepole pine, aspen and
cottonwood. Nearby alpine meadows are cloaked with alpine flowers. Manning
Park is home to a variety of wildlife such as squirrels and chipmunks,
marmot and beaver, the mule deer, black bear, coyote and over 190 species
of birds. Visitors interested in exploring the areas historical background
may hike along either the Dewdney, Whatcom or Hope Pass trails which
served as the major routes between the coast and interior during the
late 1800's.
LOCATION
Highway
3 runs through Manning Provincial Park. Nearby centers include Hope,
which is 26 km west of the park and Princeton,48 km east.
PARK
FACILITIES & ACTIVITIES
Camping
- There are four campgrounds within the park, each providing water,
toilets and firewood: Hampton (98 sites), Mule Deer (49 sites), Coldspring
(63 sites) and Lightning Lake (144 sites). Wilderness camping is permitted
in designated areas. Picnic areas and a good beach are available.
Fishing
and Boating - Although power boats are prohibited in the park,
canoeing is a good way to explore the waterways. Anglers may try
fly fishing for rainbow trout in Strike and Lightning Lakes. Dolly
Varden, cutthroat and rainbow trout are resident in the Similkameen
and Sumallo Rivers.
Hiking
and Trails - There are numerous hiking trails leading to the
parks scenic features as well as designated trails for horses and
mountain bikes. During the winter months 80 km of ungroomed cross
country ski trails wind through the area.
COMMERCIAL
FACILITIES
Local
businesses offer visitors accommodation and meals as well as guided
trail rides. The Gibson Pass Ski area provides a ski school and rental
equipment.
