The Kootenays,
a region of British Columbia that has everything. Majestic snowcapped
mountains, large lakes, hot springs, mountain streams and rivers,
waterfowl and wildlife. This area is rich in history, the living is
easy with adventures around every corner. The B.C. Kootenays means
mountain biking, horseback
riding, mountain climbing, back
country hiking and back packing, fishing, as well as rafting,
kayaking or canoeing.
For an easy river paddling trip, head to Rock Creek and the Kettle
River, which is on the border of the Okanagan Similkameen and Kootenays.
In low water this is a grade or class 2 run, with moderate rapids,
but in high water they change to a 3+. The Kettle River offers the
cleanest and clearest swimming waters in B.C. with unsurpassed scenery.
There are a number of put-in spots that will shorten or lengthen your
trip, it all depends on you. Or you can camp and do easy day trips
with an empty boat.
West of Nelson
is the Slocan River, a short river that is a grade or class two with
some rocks and snags. It's recommended for paddlers with good water
moving skills, but in high water this river can become very technical.
The trip from Slocan
City to your take-out at Crescent Valley is about 46 km (28.5
mi.) and can be an easy day trip. Along the way you can see peaks
of the Valhalla Park and you
will paddle by a bird sanctuary.
The Lardeau River, located north of Kaslo,
on Highway 31 is a grade or class two paddle with rocks and snaps,
so be sure to scout ahead. This is a good day trip with empty canoes.
There is easy access, as Highway 31 follows the river, so you can
put-in at any of the access roads. Take out is near the mouth of Cooper
Creek at the bridge.
It's always a good idea to check with local equipment dealers or the
local club for the latest conditions of any of the rivers and lakes,
always paddle on the side of caution. Be safe, have fun!
