Location: From the city of Kamloops travel west on Hwy. #1 (Trans Canada Hwy.) for 11.4 km. (7.1 mi.). Turn south onto the Coquihalla Hwy. (Hwy. #5). Take the Helmer exit off Hwy. #5 and turn west (right) and travel a short distance to the lake. Contact Merritt Forest District Office for Helmer exit closure dates. If Helmer exit is closed, you can get to the lake by taking Exit 336 off Hwy. #5. Head west (turn right as if heading toward the town of Logan Lake) a short distance and then turn south (left) onto the road leading to Surrey, Sussex and Helmer Lake.

Resorts & Campsites: An excellent lake for the youngsters, or fly fishermen who want to practice their presentation techniques. Helmer is blessed with large shoal areas of good depth, great spawning habitat, and high food sources. Action can be fast and furious for small Rainbows up to 1 lb. Efforts are usually concentrated east of the island where it goes from shallows to a 10 meter depth.

Sussex Lake - Sussex Lake, with a surface area of 25 ha. (62 ac.) can be found just north of Helmer Lake on the road to La le Jeune. Sussex provides a Rainbow fishery with trout in the 1 lb. class. Fishing is consistent throughout the summer months. Located at the lake is a small 3 vehicle BCFS campsite with cartop boat launch. Surrey Lake, a couple of kilometers north of Sussex, is 55 ha. (136 ac.) in size and lies at an elevation of 1395 m. (4576 ft.). A resort offering cabins and boats can be found on the lake. Like Sussex Lake, Surrey is a consistent performer throughout the open water season, with Rainbows in the 1 lb. range. Frogmoore Lakes, can be found by travelling a few kilometers east from Surrey on a very rough road. A 4x4 may be necessary. Frogmoore contains large quantities of small Rainbows and the action can be very fast when the lake is on. Large Rainbows up to 5 lbs., although rare, have also been caught.
