The 32,000
hectare provincial park is situated in the Slocan Range of the Selkirk
Mountains in the Kootenay Region of British
Columbia. The park is named for its namesake glacier that looms on the
impressive Kokanee Peak.The
word kokanee means "red fish", a Kootenay Indian word referring to the
land-locked salmon of Kootenay Lake.
There are
over 30 glacial lakes within the park, each inhabitated by a number
of species of fish. Surrounding these glacial gems are forests
of hemlock, western red cedar, lodgepole pine, larch and Engelmann spruce
where wildlife
such as mountain goat, deer, black bear, rabbit and squirrels reside.
Bird species include
grouse and the golden eagle.
Much of
the parks landscape is made up of Nelson granite, an impressive geological
formation. The rugged terrain of the park appeals to experienced visitors
interested in outdoor recreation,
including adventurous hiking, mountaineering and ski mountaineering.
