CRANBROOK
Majestic Mount Baker towers over Cranbrook's picturesque parks,
forested campgrounds and verdant golf courses. It looms as sentinel
to a city positioned on the threshold of five of Canada's most
outstanding provincial parks. Highway 3/95, both well maintained
routes, can take you east to Fernie or west to Creston. You'll
find planty to see and do: golf course, mini-golf, waterslides,
swimming pool, skating rink, tennis courts, city & provincial
parks, hunting, fishing, hiking, trail-rides, snowmobiling, downhill
& cross-country skiing.
ELKFORD
Situated in the Rocky Mountains of South-eastern British Columbia
lush, forested slopes, spectacular alpine-meadows, glacier fed
lakes and streams surround our picturesque community of Elkford.
In such a setting, it is no wonder a myriad of outdoor and sports
lovers have visited this area for over a hundred years. The same
wildlife that attracts hunters has also begun to attract tourists
with cameras, binoculars and sketchpads to view animals in their
natural habitat.
FAIRMONT
HOT SPRINGS
The soothing waters of Fairmont Hot Springs, coupled with world
class golfing and outdoor splendour have made this one of BC's
foremost holiday destinations. Located 112 km (69 miles) north
of Cranbrook, on Hwy 93/95, Fairmont Hot Springs offers a wide
range of accommodations and first rate recreational facilities.
FERNIE
Located in the Elk Valley, Fernie developed along the route
of the railway that served the area's coal mines. This mining
and logging community of approximately 5,000, is located on Highway
3, a major route that runs east to Alberta and west to Cranbrook.
The visitor will enjoy hiking, mountain biking, trail riding,
fishing, kayaking, canoeing, downhill & cross-country skiing.
Fernie also offers a golf course and a variety of accommodations.
FIELD
Field is home to 300 inhabitants, and was established in 1885
with the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The community
was named after Cyrus W. Field who was a promoter of the Trans-Atlantic
Cable. The CPR was experiencing financial troubles at the time,
and he visited the community at the invitation of company officials
who wanted investment money - he didn't invest.
FORT
STEELE
Visitors can enjoy first-class musical comedies, scripted street
dramas, food at the International, and much more. The grounds
are open year-round, dawn to dusk with an admission fee in peak
season of mid-June to early Sept.
GOLDEN
Located at the junction of Highways 1 and 95, and surrounded
by massive snow-clad peaks, shimmering lakes and high country
blue skies, Golden is the perfect spot to enjoy nature. Activities
include heli-skiing, ice-climbing, hang gliding, mountaineering,
horseback riding, river rafting, kayaking, fishing, wildlife viewing,
birdwatching, biking, hiking, golfing, skiing, wetland tours,
and snowmobiling.
INVERMERE
Invermere is a lively tourist area, very popular with Albertans.
Windermere Lake is the center of summer activities and Panorama
Ski Resort is the focus for winter. Follow Highway 95 south from
Golden to the north end of Windermere Lake. Highway 95/93 south
takes the traveller to Cranbrook. Many recreational opportunities
await the vistor: a downhill ski resort, heli-skiing, cross-country
skiing, hiking, biking, golfing, river rafting, horseback riding,
swimming, and boating.
KIMBERLEY
Famous for it's Bavarian theme, Kimberley is located on Highway
95A, 32 km north of Cranbrook. Canada's highest city offers a
vacation with a firy tale feel. Scenic biking and hiking paths
thread through Kimberley Nature Park. The Mark Creek Nature Trail
leads to Marysville Falls, a 100' cascade of water over rocks
worn smooth. You'll enjoy downhill skiing, golfing, an alpine
slide, amusement park, mini-golf, indoor tennis and racquetball
courts, bumper boats and go-carts. The chairlift at North Star
Mountain offers unrivalled views of the Rocky Mountains. Highway
95A, 32 km. north of Cranbrook.
RADIUM
HOT SPRINGS
Radium's steaming springs have made it a favourite destination
offering great hospitality as well as superb restaurants. Hot
pools, golf courses, mini-golf, racquetball, squash, downhill
& cross-country skiing, horseback riding, hiking, biking,
and snowmobiling are sure to keep you busy. Accommodation ranges
from modest campsites to Four Diamond resorts. Sheer cliffs, surging
snow-fed streams and lush river basins characterize the area,
located south of Golden and north of Cranbrook on Highway 95.
REVELSTOKE
Nestled in the shadows of the imposing mountains of the Selkirk
Range on Trans Canada Hwy #1, this modern community is a haven
for ourdoor enthusiasts. Hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking,
whitewater rafting and Heli-skiing are just a few of the many
activities you can enjoy in the Revelstoke area. The railway played
a large part in Revelstokes development and its story can be viewed
at the Railway Museum.
SPARWOOD
Highway 3 runs through the community - southeast to the Alberta
border and southwest to Fernie. Highway 43 heads north from Sparwood
to Elkford. Beyond this alpine community exists a treasure of
high country adventure: fly fishing in pristine mountain lakes
and streams, whitewater rafting, hiking or biking old forestry
trails and wildlife photo opportunities. Beautiful community parks
are favourites for picnics and evening strolls.
WINDERMERE
Located about 16 km (10 miles) north of Fairmont Hot Springs and
8 km (5 miles) southeast of Invermere, on Highway 93/95, Windermere
is located on the shores of beautiful Windermere Lake. Motels,
campgrounds, RV Parks and a bed and breakfast are available in
Windermere, and the surrounding area abounds with things to do.
